The visits of the mohel to the child

It is important that the mohel comes to meet the parents during the different stages of the milah not only for the brit-milah itself but also to answer their questions and give them all the useful information.

Here are the details of the recommended visits.

Visit 1

After the first contact (telephone or other), the mohel comes to the baby around the 5th or 6th day after birth. He needs to make sure that the baby is healthy so that the brit-milah can take place. In addition, this visit is a preparation appointment for parents.

Visit 2

On the day of the milah, the mohel checks if there is no change in the baby’s condition. He performs the circumcision after which he makes sure that everything is fine before leaving the place. It will be possible to call him back if necessary.

Visit 3

The next day the mohel comes to remove the bandage and inform the parents of the rest of the care to be provided to the baby.

Visit 4

Between one and two months later, the mohel sees the baby again to ensure the perfect healing and the complete success of the procedure. This visit is advised by the Milah Commission of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel.

Do the Mohalim make all these visits?

Quite often, the mohalim only see the child once (on the day of the milah) or twice (a few days before).

It is sometimes necessary for him to return in the evening or the next day at the request of the parents. This third visit is highly recommended in order to prevent parents from changing the dressings themselves (although this is possible by following the instructions of the mohel by phone).

I recommend a fourth visit (even when everything is fine) three months later. This visit does not have a character of absolute necessity.
